The Great Dictator
His first dialogue picture, The Great Dictator (1940), was an act of defiance against German dictator Adolf Hitler and Nazism, filmed and released in the United States one year before the US abandoned its policy of isolationism to enter World War II.
his earlier work (1917-ish)was wonderful. the simplicity of the content and the ultimate reliance on reading and interpreting a mute but emotion-laden face to give the film(s) their content, along with hand gestures and physical action(literally kicking eachother in the butt) was priceless. seriously though, how much trouble can someone get into inside a pawn shop?
